Gas is what powers the majority of vehicles.Recently, however, as more attention has been placed on the health of our environment, more and more manufacturers are beginning to look at different options.
Today, there are several different types of alternate powered vehicles. Let’s take a look at a few of them:
Power by Liquefied Petroleum Gas
Liquefied Petroleum Gas is created through the refining of petroleum.
Also known as propane, this type of gas contains hydrocarbons that turn to liquid at moderate pressures and turn to vapour at normal temperatures.
The main advantage of liquefied petroleum gas is that it is widely available. Another benefit is that it is fire resistant, making it much safer than regular gas.
Compressed Natural Gas
Compressed Natural gas is just as the name states – natural gas. The main benefit of this gas is that it is easy on the engine, reducing maintenance costs for the vehicle owner. In addition, it is the most beneficial fuel, helping to reduce vehicle emissions. While most things about this gas are generally positive, the main disadvantage is the big and bulky tank that it requires.
Electricity
Increasing in popularity are electrical powered vehicles. Divided into battery and hybrid classes, electricity can be made in many different ways. As we all know, electricity can be produced by burning sulfur, it can also be produced, however, using photovoltaic cells. When this is the case, electricity is completely environmentally friendly, releasing no pollutants into the air and burning no nonrenewable resources.
The main, and most obvious, advantage of vehicles powered by electricity is that they have the potential to be the cleanest means of travel, emitting very little (if any) pollution into the air. They are also low maintenance.
Hydrogen
Hydrogen can also be created using sulphur or photovoltaic cells.
In cases where hydrogen is made with water, no pollutants will be released into the atmosphere.Using hydrogen powered vehicles also prevents greenhouse gasses from being emitted into the atmosphere.
Ethanol
A type of grain alcohol, Ethanol is created through the fermenting of biomass. Ethanol, like Hydrogen, emits no greenhouse gasses into the air. The main advantage of Ethanol is that, because it is a renewable resource, it does not contribute to global warming in any ways.
The types of vehicles named above are just a few of the many types of alternative powered vehicles around. Other types of alternative fuels include liquefied natural gas, methanol, and biodiesel. Today, more and more people are focusing on the health of the environment, investing in alternatively powered vehicles.
The best alternative powered vehicles to do this are those that are powered by electricity, those that are powered by hydrogen, and those that are powered by Ethanol. Each generated using completely natural means, or using completely renewable resources, none of these vehicles contribute to the pollution or deterioration of resources that are causing harm to our environment today. The next time you need a new car, do your part in saving the environment and look at your alternative options.
